Search and AI chat

Readers arrive with a question, not a browsing plan. Two features answer it: full-text search, and an AI chat that answers from your published pages.

Full-text search across endpoints and pages, available from every page with ⌘K or Ctrl K. It needs no setup, and picks up published content automatically.

Choose where the search box sits under Appearance: the top of the sidebar, centered in the top bar, or a button.

AI chat

Readers can ask a question in plain words, and get an answer drawn from your docs.

Answers from your pages

It retrieves your published endpoints and pages, rather than relying on a model's memory of an API that looks like yours.

Cited

Each answer cites the pages it came from, so a reader can check it rather than trust it.

Turning it on

In Docs settings, under AI chat:

SettingWhat it does
Enable chat with docsShows the chat on your site
Messages per visitor, per hourLimits how much one reader can send. 20 unless you change it

Settings apply when you save.

How it answers

  1. It classifies the message

A greeting or an obviously off-topic message gets a canned reply, with no model call and no credit spent.

  2. It searches your docs

It finds the most relevant published endpoints and pages. For a follow-up such as "and pagination?", it uses the previous answer to work out what you mean.

  3. It answers from those

The model answers from what it found, and the citations are shown with the answer.

What it can answer

QuestionHandled well?
"How do I paginate?"Yes, if a page covers it
"What does the 409 on this endpoint mean?"Yes, if the reference documents it
"Why is my key returning 401?"Only if your docs explain the failure modes
"What's my account's rate limit?"No. It reads docs, not your database

Making it better

Chat can only find what's written, so better docs make better answers.

Say what things are for, in words, not only their names.

Write down your error meanings, on the endpoint or in a guide.

Check Top queries under Analytics. A question people keep asking is a page you need.

Credits

Each chat answer costs one AI credit. When your balance runs out, chat tells readers it can't answer right now. Other parts of your docs keep working. Top up, or wait for your plan's allowance to renew.

What gets indexed

Search and chat only use published pages. A draft isn't findable, so a page you can see in the studio may not be one chat can cite. After you publish, give it a moment to be indexed.
